About the Opportunity

The Facilities System Engineer is an engineering authority for shipyard facilities and infrastructure developed by Austal Defence Shipbuilding Australia (ADA), required for the delivery of shipbuilding programs across the Henderson Shipbuilding Precinct.

This role ensures that all engineering systems—including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, automation and control systems—are designed and implemented to meet industry and defence standards, safety regulations, and operational efficiency requirements. What’s Involved

  • Provide Engineering support to Design, implement, and integrate shipyard infrastructure systems (power, compressed air, water treatment, HVAC, fire suppression etc.) into the facility.
  • Provide engineering support to Specify, procure, install, and commission operational machinery (steel cutting, welding, bending, lifting, assembly, surface treatment).
  • Ensure all systems and machinery comply with defence requirements, industry regulations, government construction codes, and occupational safety standards
  • Introduce automation, monitoring, and sustainability initiatives to improve shipyard efficiency and resilience

You’ll Need

Essential 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering.
  •  5+ years of experience in heavy industrial facilities engineering, preferably in shipbuilding, heavy steel fabrication, manufacturing or defence projects.
  • Proficiency in Engineering software (CAD, CATIA, SolidWorks etc…)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and capability
  • Strong knowledge of operational automated machinery design, installation, and maintenance.
  • Experience in civil engineering and infrastructure construction projects
  • Familiarity with defence and industry standards, construction codes, and ISO quality systems.
  • Experience with industrial control systems.

Desirable 

  • Systems integration and multidisciplinary engineering coordination experience.
  • Project management and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Reliability engineering and asset management knowledge
  • Problem-solving and innovation in industrial environments experience
